How to drive through New York roads during winter

As winter blankets New York in its icy embrace, a new challenge emerges – navigating the state’s roads under frosty conditions. The cost of road accidents in winter is always higher than at any other time. Fortunately, the following tips can help ensure your safety and that of others on the road.

Prepare your vehicle

Before hitting the road, it’s important to ensure your vehicle is ready for winter conditions. Start by checking your tires – are they properly inflated and have enough tread depth? Consider switching to winter tires for better traction on snow and ice. Check your wipers, defrosters and heater to ensure they are functioning properly. Keep an emergency kit in your car with essentials like a flashlight, blanket, first aid kit and extra snacks.

Drive defensively

Modern cars come with a cruise control feature that, on normal days, can even help prevent the chances of motor vehicle accidents due to human error. However, when roads are icy or snowy, it is best to avoid using cruise control. This feature can read the road conditions as normal and use the speed limit set for the road you are in. This will subsequently cause acceleration and result in a loss of control.

In situations where your car is skidding, drive in the direction of the skid until you regain control. Slamming on your brakes or sharply turning can worsen the situation. And keep a safe distance from other cars, especially large trucks, as they may have trouble stopping on icy roads.

Plan your route

Check your local weather and road conditions before heading out. Try to avoid driving during a snowstorm or when roads are especially icy. If possible, plan your route to include main roads that the state will likely clear of snow and ice. And if you’re traveling long distances, take breaks every few hours to rest and stretch.

In addition to these tips, it is important to remember the regular traffic rules while driving. For instance, don’t drink and drive, buckle your seatbelt and avoid distracted driving. Remember that you can always arrive safely at your destination regardless of the weather conditions.
