What it takes to care for a brain injury victim

On Behalf of | Mar 20, 2018 | Brain Injury

Suffering head injuries can happen to anybody in a car accident, at work or while taking part in sports. March is brain injury month, dedicated to creating awareness of this catastrophic condition, which is far more common than what most people might think. Victims and their loved ones nationwide, including in New York, have to cope with multiple challenges as they work on maximum recovery.

A mother in another state wants people to understand the daily challenges faced by brain injury victims and their caregivers and loved ones. Her son was ejected from his vehicle in an accident; he landed on the roadway where he laid for a couple of hours before another car ran over him. That driver called for help, and after a year in a coma, three weeks on life support and 21 procedures, the victim defied doctors who said he would not survive.

However, this 21-year-old man is six feet tall and weighs 200 pounds, and he needs around-the-clock care. His mother is positive about his continued improvement, and she says that although doctors said if he survived he would be a vegetable, he communicates by nodding his head to letters as she recites the alphabet. He had to re-learn everything and is now able to help lift his lower body and legs when she dresses him.

The story this mother tells underscores the importance of securing the services of an experienced New York personal injury attorney in the event of a brain injury caused by the negligence of another party. Financial relief will be critical in the years following such an accident. A lawyer can provide the necessary support and guidance throughout the legal proceedings and also help with putting a value on past and future financial losses when documenting claims for adjudication by the court.
