Car accidents: New York teen dies in crash

On Behalf of | Oct 21, 2016 | Car Accidents

A teenager involved in a serious crash on Interstate 81 has been released from the hospital. Car accidents can often cause critical injuries, and this was the case for a 16-year-old Whitesboro, New York, teen who barely survived the crash. Another teen was not so lucky and perished in the accident, which is still under investigation by authorities.

The accident report shows the 16-year-old boy was traveling northbound around 6:30 a.m. the morning of Oct. 3 when he appeared to lose control of his vehicle. The car swerved over the median and into the southbound lanes, where it struck an SUV and then a van. The teen’s passenger, also a 16-year-old male, was rushed to a local hospital along with the driver. The passenger was later pronounced dead, and the driver was in critical condition.

The drivers of the other two vehicles were also taken to local hospitals for treatment. Their statuses were not included in the report. Several witnesses, including an off-duty firefighter, stopped to render aid at the accident site ahead of first responders. Police are now in the process of reconstructing the accident to find out just what happened.

Fatal car accidents are always tragic, particularly if they could have been avoided. If New York police find the driver was reckless or negligent in his operation of the vehicle leading materially to the crash, he could face criminal charges. In addition, the family of the deceased passenger, as well as both injured drivers, could file wrongful death and/or personal injury suits against the boy, and against anyone else with ownership interest in the vehicle involved.
