Professional experience
Mr. Smith joined Coughlin & Gerhart, L.L.P. in 1964 and served as the firm's Managing Partner for over twenty years.  He is currently Of Counsel.  Mr. Smith's practice has centered around representing area banks, as well as both large and small corporate clients for general corporate work and mergers and acquisitions. He has represented both sellers and purchasers involving both privately and publicly held corporations. Transactions have included negotiated agreements throughout the United States and in Europe and cash tender offers in the United States. Lender clients include M&T Bank and HSBC Bank USA. Corporate clients include Dover Technologies International, Inc., Crowley Foods, Inc., Universal Instruments Corporation, Dover Electronics, Inc., The Maple-Vail Book Manufacturing Group, Buckingham Manufacturing Co., Inc. and McIntosh Laboratory, Inc.

In addition to his law practice, Mr. Smith is active in community affairs and bar association activities. He has served as chairman of the annual campaigns of the United Way of Broome County, Inc. and Roberson Museum and Science Center. Mr. Smith has served as an officer and member of the Board of Directors of both organizations. He is a member of the Broome County, New York State, Pennsylvania and American Bar Associations. He is an Emeritus Member of the Board of Editors of the New York Bar Journal and has written and lectured on various corporate law subjects.
